What is SCRIP?
It is the easiest fund raising program around! The reason it is so easy and effective is because participants are not required to change their spending habits. Many places our participants spend money, are already on the program and more are being added as the program grows. SCRIP is available for virtually everything including gas, groceries, restaurants, and department stores… the list is extensive!
How does it work?
Gift certificates are purchased from area and chain merchants at a discount. The gift certificates are then sold for face value to participants to use just as cash or gift cards would be used. The difference between purchase price and face value is the profit for the program.
In St. Mary’s program, the profit is then split in half. The first half goes to the school to help keep tuition costs down for all our students.
The second half is credited to the buyer’s choice of accounts. Currently, there are six options.
1. Tuition credit for the buyer’s child(ren) attending St. Mary’s School.
2. Tuition credit for the buyer’s child(ren) attending St. Mary Youth Faith Formation.
3. Tuition credit for a family other than the buyer’s whose child(ren) attend St. Mary’s School or Youth Faith Formation. (This is frequently used by grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and co-workers)
4. The school fund. (Which means 100% of the profit would go to the School)
5. St. Mary’s Parish Capitol Improvement fund.
6. St. Mary Youth Faith Formation fund.
Why should I participate?
Why not? — Is the real question.
• It does not cost any more to use the certificates than it would to make your purchases with cash.
• SCRIP could help with household budgeting.
• SCRIP makes gift giving easy! Use it for birthdays, Christmas, weddings, etc.
Although, the best reason to use this program stated simply is: for the profit the school and the church can make — The more people that participate, the more money for our community. Whether your focus is to keep the school tuition down or to assist in paying off our parish debt, our SCRIP program is worthwhile and effective.
