Dear Charger Parents,
St. Paul, writing to his co-worker St. Timothy, urges him to “stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands” (2 Tim 1:6). This “gift of God” is the Holy Spirit. St. Paul then reminds Timothy that “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control” (2 Tim 1:7). Through baptism and confirmation we too have received the Gift of God (the Holy Spirit). Yet, there are times in our life when the “fire of the Spirit” can grow weak or dim. Like Timothy, we must sometimes “stir into flame” this great gift from God that we have received. The flame needs to burn bright and strong. The season of Lent is an ideal time to do this – to fan the flames of the Spirit so we too can know the power and the love and the discipline of the Spirit in a deeper way. Be sure to take advantage of the spiritual opportunities Lent provides. It is a time-tested way to open oneself anew to the power of God’s Spirit.
During the Season of Lent, St. Mary Parish is planning a Lenten Homecoming, as former pastors (Rev. Jim Roth, Rev. Tim Babcock, Rev. Tony Sulkowski, and Rev. Brian Chabala) who have served our community return and invite us to return to the Lord during Lent. Please refer to the parish website or the bulletin for specific information.
On Friday, March 19 at the 8:15 a.m. Mass, we will celebrate our fathers. We invite our fathers to come to mass and sit with their child/ren. Afterward, we will gather in the PLC for morning refreshments. In the PLC we will share in the tradition of St. Joseph’s table; where baked goods can be donated for distribution to our families at the God’s Work’s meal that night.

Will Our Teens Have Faith? On Sun., March 21 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. there will be a presentation in the PLC that will explore the findings of the National Study of Youth & Religion (NSYR) concerning the religious and spiritual lives of today’s youth. This talk will examine the crucial role of parents and the family. For information contact Lorie Bronson (734) 241-6097.

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the learning experience for our teachers in New York City successful. Lucy Calkins, researcher and professor of the National Reading and Writing Project at the Columbia Teacher College reinforced that information is doubling every 72 hours in the world. And, although we can never bypass teachers with programs or technology, the “new” National Standards for Language Arts (not yet released!) demands that 50%-60% of teaching our children to read and write will be “content area literacy” instruction. At St. Mary’s we will be ready for the changing National Standards, as we prepare now by studying together, collaborating with our neighboring Catholic schools, and ordering our resources wisely and different than ever before. We are preparing our children to be “Life Long Readers of Information.” During our studies at the Columbia Teacher College, as colleagues who trust and believe in each other, we realized that when the world is pressing in a different direction, you need to let the wind out of your sails and go with it . . . St. Mary’s is leading the way with workshop methodology and the study of content area literacy in Monroe.
Everyone who is leading
must go to the mountains!
Peace,
Mrs. Curtis
