Quick! Can you calculate how many donuts are needed to feed a group of 7th and 8th graders every Saturday until February?
St. Mary’s “Mathletes” are once again off and solving problems (and being treated to donuts) on Saturday mornings! Some of our 7th and 8th graders have been selected to be a part of MATHCOUNTS which is a national mathematics competition for middle school students promoting student interest in Math and Science.
Participation helps students to develop problem solving techniques and critical thinking skills, while having fun!
• The club is coached by Mr. Neo Hadjicharalambous and Mrs. Amy Cooke.
• Our sessions are held on Saturday mornings and once a week during recess.
• The county competition is held in February in Woodhaven. We will take a team of 8 students from our club to compete with a dozen other local schools.
• The competition is sponsored by NASA, the National Society of Professional Engineers, Lockheed Martin and other science and engineering companies.
• This is our fifth year of hosting MathCounts at St. Mary’s. Last year, one of our students, Jacob Miller, qualified for the state competition!
• Additional information and daily math practice problems can be found on the web at www.mathcounts.org.
• Contact Coach Neo at neohad@ameritech.net or 241-3741.
• Contact Coach Cooke at cooke@stmarychargers.com or 241-3548.
• We will post our schedule on this website for your convenience.
• Students must remember to bring their math binder, a pencil and calculator to each class.
